Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Tooth Removal

We know that tooth extractions sounds like a scary process, but it doesn’t have to be. Come to Genesis Dental, where all of our trained dentists can make the entire experience easy and comfortable.

Experiencing Tooth Pain? Have an Emergency?

Some tooth extractions can’t wait. However, if you need help right away, give the Genesis Dental location closest to you a call. Plus, we always strive to be available and can often provide an appointment the same day, even if it’s after hours.

When Do I Need a Tooth Removed?

While we always advocate saving your natural teeth when possible, in some cases we may recommend removing a tooth to make sure your mouth stays healthy. However, home reasons we might choose to extract a tooth is for:

  • Excessive tooth decay
  • Abscessed teeth
  • Tooth crowding
  • Preparation for dental implants
  • Baby teeth that haven’t fallen out naturally

We always suggest coming in for a cleaning and exam in Utah or Kansas first to check for any cavities or infection that could inhibit the healing process. Plus, we’ll also take any necessary X-rays to get the full scope of your mouth and find any hidden issues before extracting any teeth.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

If you notice that your wisdom teeth are growing in, it’s time to schedule your dentist appointment. While not all people need their wisdom teeth removed, we may recommend removing them for many reasons, such as preventing teeth crowding or preventing pain from impacted teeth.

However, during your regular exam, we can let you know whether or not you should get your wisdom teeth removed.

What to Expect After Your Tooth Extraction

We’ll walk you through how to care for your mouth after the tooth extraction, as each case is different. For more extensive treatments, you should expect to bring someone to take you home after your appointment. Additionally, other tooth extraction procedures may make it possible to simply drive home yourself!

There are a few things you can do to make sure recovery is as smooth as possible.

  • Keep the gauze over the extraction area to stop any bleeding for a few hours after treatment
  • Don’t rinse your mouth or spit for 24 hours after the tooth has been extracted
  • Avoid drinking through a straw, smoking, or drinking hot liquids for 24 hours
  • Take ibuprofen or aspirin to alleviate any discomfort

If you are experiencing pain or the swelling doesn’t go down after a few days, please give us a call! We want to make sure your smile is taken care of.
