If you work during the week and your children go to school, you understand that there is a struggle in scheduling needed appointments without taking time off or pulling your kids out of school. Finding a time that works best for you and your children to be seen on the same day is very difficult. If you are someone who would benefit from scheduling needed appointments on the weekends, you are in luck. Genesis Dental is your Utah dentist open on weekends to fit your busy lifestyle.

Family Dentistry

We pride ourselves on being a family dental practice with services and treatments for people of all ages. We understand that each person is different and will require unique care throughout their life, and we are dedicated to giving you what you need when you need it. Family dentists offer all dental services that one or one’s child will need, all in one office.

Our family dental services include children’s dentistry, orthodontics, dentures, emergency dentistry, and tooth restorations. Whatever you need, we are available to give it to you at any time, including the weekends.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a dental specialty that involves diagnosing and treating malpositioned teeth and incorrect bites. Many know orthodontic work is associated with braces and making your smile more aesthetically pleasing by straightening your teeth. Although orthodontic treatments do this, they are also responsible for the health and functionality of your teeth.

We offer orthodontics for teenagers and adults who have lost all of their baby teeth. If you are interested in obtaining orthodontic treatment, please call us.

Friendly Service

Nothing makes us happier than helping our patients smile their healthy and bright smiles. Each team member is passionate about dental care and ensuring that our patients have positive experiences. We have created a fun, professional, and comfortable office where our patients feel at home.

You won’t find a more friendly and caring dental staff than the Genesis Dental team.

Flexible Scheduling

We understand that serious dental issues may arise at a very inconvenient time, and we want to be prepared and available to help you when this happens. We are dedicated to our patients and the people of Utah. Not only are we open during the weekends to make scheduling treatments more convenient for our patients, but we are also very flexible during the week.

Our flexible scheduling will give you the power to choose when you have the time for care and not have to make the time.

No Insurance, No Problem

Some patients forgo professional, needed dental care because they are without dental insurance. We want the residents of Utah to always have the ability and the means to have the care they need. Not only do we offer high-quality services at an affordable price, but we also have an in-office Loyalty Plan that patients without insurance can apply for to receive discounts and even more affordable prices.

Loyalty Plan

Non-insured patients now qualify for a plan that will fit excellently with their budget. The Loyalty Plan is designed to give our patients the needed dental services at discounted rates.

For a small fee of $20 a year, per person, you are entitled to numerous discounts and benefits in our office. Details regarding the Loyalty Plan can be found on our website or by calling our office and asking one of our team members.

If you would like us to go over the plan in further detail and help you apply, we would be more than happy to help you schedule an appointment.

Utah Dentist Open on Weekends

Being open on the weekends has allowed us to help our patients with their scheduling. If you are new to the area and searching for a flexible and affordable dentist for you and your family, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our dental office here in Utah.

Is after 5 pm the only days of the week that you have time for self-care appointments, including dental work? At Genesis Dental of Magna, we understand how hard it is to find available general care appointments in Utah after 5. Making things easy for our patients, we are currently open and taking appointments after the general hours of 9-5. We have a wide range of services and benefits for our patients and urge you to take advantage of them, which is why we are a top extended hours dentist in Utah.

Family Dentistry

The best way to receive tailored dental care for you and your family’s specific needs is to be seen and treated by a family dentist. Family dentistry is a term used to describe multiple treatments and procedures available for patients of any age. Each family member is different and will need tailored care. Seeing a family dentist is a way to ensure that all your family’s dental needs are met in the one dental office.

Children’s dentistry is a specialty that we offer for families with young and older children. Teaching young children about dental care and hygiene needs to start young to instill good healthy habits that will last them a lifetime. We offer specialized care and minor sedation options for children who are nervous and experience anxiety when sitting in the dental chair.

Orthodontics

Traditional braces, Invisalign, and Damon brackets are the three different orthodontic treatments we offer at Genesis Dental. Our dentists are trained in the specialty of orthodontics to help teenagers and adults diagnose and treat crooked teeth and mouth abnormalities. Orthodontics can correct the appearance, function, and health of a patient’s teeth.

We offer orthodontics in our office for the convenience of our patients. It is beneficial only to see one dental professional who knows the details of your mouth for all of your dental wants and needs.

Friendly Service

Each member of our dental team at Genesis Dental is dedicated to giving each patient a comfortable, positive, and tailored experience. Each time you visit our office, you will see our friendly staff give their all for Your Care. We are passionate about oral health and helping patients in the area develop a positive relationship with coming to the dentist.

If you ever have any questions or concerns related to your care, please don’t hesitate to ask any member of our team. You are our top priority, and we will do all we can to serve you.

Flexible Scheduling

Not only are we open after hours, but we also offer flexible scheduling for every other day of the week. We understand that life is busy, unpredictable, and impossible to plan out. Having extended hours availability has allowed us to serve our patients more.

Need to schedule your next routine visit or need to meet with a Dr. about a possible oral issue? Please give our office a call to assist you in scheduling your appointment.

No Insurance? No Problem!

Don’t have insurance? Please come in and visit us anyway. We are passionate about dental care and encourage all to receive the care they need and deserve no matter what. Because we have seen patients decide not to receive dental care due to the fear of the cost, we offer an alternate option without insurance.

For our patients without insurance, we offer an in-office Loyalty Plan.

Loyalty Plan

If you are in Utah near Magna and without insurance, please do not worry about how you will afford dental care. Our Loyalty Plan is an affordable way to obtain the dental work you need and even want. Patients pay only $20 a year per person for multiple discounts and benefits with our Loyalty Plan.

Extended Hours Dentist in Utah

If the only times you have available to receive dental care is after regular working hours, we are the dental office for you. Being a Utah dentist open after five and offering extended hours has helped so many residents, and we look forward to helping you too.

Do you work regular business hours and find it hard to find a dentist that can work with your schedule, or find it hard to find a single day to have all family members seen? Well, look no further because Genesis Dental is open on Saturday. Being a Utah dentist open on Saturday has helped relieve our patient’s stress that naturally comes with scheduling a dental appointment. During our weekend schedule, we also offer all of our services.

Family Dentistry

If you have multiple people in your household and a family of all different ages, you will benefit from seeing a family dentist such as Genesis Dental. We offer a wide range of custom services to patients of all ages for our patient’s convenience.

Each of our dentists has specialized in children’s dentistry treatments and procedures. In the early years of dental care, a child will develop a positive or negative relationship with the dentist. Our main goal is to help educate your child on oral hygiene in a fun and comfortable environment.

Orthodontics

Genesis Dental is no ordinary general dental practice. Our dentists are also trained in orthodontics. Orthodontics is a dental specialty that deals with diagnosing and treating crooked teeth, misaligned jaws, and other abnormal bites. Usually, if a patient is being seen by a general dentist and requires or desires orthodontic work, they need to see an additional orthodontic specialist. Because we are so dedicated to our patients having all-around convenient and available dental care, we also offer orthodontic work.

Giving you personalized dental care is essential to us. To provide you with exactly what you want for orthodontic care, we offer three different types of treatments. These treatments include:

  • Traditional Braces
  • Invisalign
  • Damon Brackets

Before your treatment, we will work closely with you to determine your wants and needs and help you decide on the best type for you.

Friendly Service

We love our patients at Genesis Dental and strive to do whatever we can to ensure each person has a great experience in our chair. As soon as you step through outdoor, we consider you family and look forward to building a relationship with you. We want you to look forward to receiving dental treatment.

We love that we get to spend each day speaking with and getting to know you, our patients.

Flexible Scheduling

We believe that dental care is essential for everyone and want to help everyone receive the care they deserve and need whenever possible. We have flexible scheduling hours to accommodate our patients’ work hours, school, and busy lives. Being open on Saturday has given our patients more flexibility in scheduling all their appointments during times that work best for them.

No Insurance, No Problem

Many people believe that if they don’t have dental insurance, seeing the dentist is out of the question due to the price. We believe that routine dental visits won’t only help you obtain a healthy smile, but they will help you maintain one for the rest of your life. If you don’t have insurance, we still want you to come in and receive dental care. We offer an in-house Loyalty Plan for our patients without insurance to give you a way to obtain affordable dental care.

Loyalty Plan

Our in-office Loyalty Plan only costs $20 per person each year. Only $20! You will receive many benefits and discounts for everyday and emergency dental care with the loyalty plan. For this small, yearly amount, each patient will receive:

  • $99 for each dental cleaning and examination, twice a year.
  • 35% off of any dental treatment
  • 25% off any orthodontic treatment

Each of our dental and orthodontic services is of the highest possible quality, and we want all patients in the area to have access to them at affordable rates. Our Loyalty Plan is available for patients without insurance or patients paying more for care with their insurance and would like to switch.

benefits of traditional braces genesis dental and orthodontics dentist in utah and kansas salt lake city, jordan, magna, district orthordontics, thanksgiving point, overland park, taylorsville, orem, west valley city, bright smiles dental, central avenue dental, murray, provo, tooeleYou are probably interested in a straight, dazzling white smile, no matter who you are. All individuals who align their mouths can benefit from traditional braces available at Genesis Dental and Orthodontics. We offer conventional braces at any one of our Utah and Kansas dental offices. Teenagers most commonly use metal braces; however, adults can also use them. This strategy has been demonstrated time and time again to be effective. Metal braces can help you reshape and improve the appearance of your smile.

The main reason people use braces is to improve the alignment of their teeth. However, traditional metal braces can correct many other oral issues as well. These include correcting overbites, underbites, crossbites, and correcting overcrowding. The process is quick and effective and will give you noticeable results.

Traditional Braces Procedure

Receiving traditional braces is an extensive process, but it is painless. We have provided the best comfort possible for you while you go through the process. Metal brackets are cemented onto the surface of each tooth. This process can take a long time because no moisture can be in your mouth, as it will prevent the adhesive from working correctly. The orthodontist will work to keep your mouth as dry as possible with different tools. Once the brackets are secured, the wire can be attached.

Each bracket is designed to clip onto a wire. The wire is U-shaped and runs along the patient’s mouth’s centerline. The wire tugs on each tooth, causing it to move into a more straight position. The traditional braces will move all of your teeth into the desired place over time. The archwire must be adjusted to perform correctly in moving the teeth into a straighter alignment. You will need to visit the dentist several times during the procedure to have your wires tightened. Tightening the wire keeps the process going and prevents your teeth from returning to their previous position.

The length of your procedure will depend on the misalignment you began with and all of the problems you want to correct. The average time, however, is 10-12 months. When you express your interest in traditional braces, we will have you in for a consultation and discuss and create a personalized treatment plan for you. We want you to have complete clarity with the procedure from the very beginning.

Benefits of Traditional Braces

  • Metal braces are sturdy and long-lasting. They’ve been demonstrated to work. It’s a method that patients know they can rely on every day.
  • Braces are meant to correct more than just misalignment issues.
  • Metal braces are permanently attached to your teeth, making it incredibly difficult to damage or lose them.
  • Traditional braces are one of the most affordable ways to straighten your teeth.

If you are interested in traditional braces, please reach out to us! The process is a long one, and the sooner we get you started on a treatment plan, the better. We are professionally trained and educated on how to help patients with metal braces. You can know that you are in the best hands possible here at Genesis Dental and Orthodontics. No matter which of our locations you visit in Utah or Kansas, we are here to help you get a smile that you love and gives you confidence! Give us a call today!

invisalign for adults genesis dental and orthodontics dentist in utah and kansas salt lake city, jordan, magna, district orthordontics, thanksgiving point, overland park, taylorsville, orem, west valley city, bright smiles dental, central avenue dental, murray, provo, tooeleInvisalign for adults is the quickest and most affordable solution to a straight smile, whether you’ve had braces before and your teeth have shifted back, or you’re just now wishing to repair some alignment difficulties. All individuals who want to improve the appearance of their smile by correcting misalignment can get Invisalign at Genesis Dental and Orthodontics. Each of our offices in Utah and Kansas offers Invisalign treatment for adults. Continue reading to learn more about Invisalign’s various advantages.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Today, adults are increasingly opting for Invisalign to straighten their teeth. Additionally, Invisalign can also address overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation with one of our dental professionals to discuss your desired outcomes and address specific issues. To build your detailed treatment plan, we will take impressions, digital x-rays, and pictures of your teeth. If you are interested in getting started on this process, come into our office today for your consultation. The first visit will be creating a treatment plan for you, and at a later date, you will receive your aligners.

Once you receive your aligners, you should wear them at least 22 hours per day, except for eating and oral hygiene. You’ll need to visit the dentist every 3-4 weeks to get a fresh set of aligners. Each group is designed to help you get closer to your goals. When you don’t wear your aligners, the time it takes for your teeth to shift is longer, slowing down the entire process. The only way to progress in the Invisalign treatment is by wearing your aligners, even if they may be annoying at first.

Benefits of Invisalign for Adults

To all adults in Utah and Kansas, it is never too late to straighten your teeth and get a smile that gives you confidence. No matter where you live, you can visit one of our dental office locations for treatment.

  • One of the most significant advantages of Invisalign is that it is virtually undetectable! Many adult patients are hesitant to have orthodontic treatment because they are uncomfortable with the idea of wearing traditional metal braces and bringing attention to themselves. With Invisalign, you may achieve your smile goals while attracting little to no unwanted attention to your grin.
  • Invisalign allows you to save time. When wearing metal braces, you must visit the dentist regularly to have the wires and brackets readjusted and tightened. The majority of the Invisalign process is accomplished in the comfort of your own home. The only exception is going to the dental office to receive new aligners.
  • It is well known that Invisalign produces outstanding outcomes in a shorter time than traditional braces. Your treatment time depends entirely on the number of modifications required; however, Invisalign typically takes 10-14 months to complete, whereas traditional braces can take up to two years to complete.
  • Because traditional braces are not removable, performing basic dental hygiene at home becomes more difficult. By removing the aligners each day to properly clean their teeth, Invisalign allows patients to maintain optimum dental health.

Invisalign is an excellent treatment option for patients of all ages. Invisalign can correct dental concerns and straighten your smile. Please get in touch with us if you’re interested in Invisalign! All individuals seeking to improve their smiles can get Invisalign at Genesis Dental and Orthodontics. Each of our locations in the state of Utah and Kansas can offer you Invisalign. Be sure to get in touch with us as soon as possible to schedule a consultation and discuss your timeline. We are excited to assist you!

invisalign for teens genesis dental and orthodontics dentist in utah and kansas salt lake city, jordan, magna, district orthordontics, thanksgiving point, overland park, taylorsville, orem, west valley city, bright smiles dental, central avenue dental, murray, provo, tooeleFor quite some time, metal braces have been the “norm” among teenagers. Teenagers frequently want braces or other orthodontic treatment in the hopes of correcting their teeth at a young age. Fortunately, there is an alternative to using wires, brackets, and elastics to straighten teeth. Invisalign for teens is the most popular method of teeth straightening. Get Invisalign at Genesis Dental and Orthodontics at our Utah or Kansas locations. We wish to help each adolescent achieve a straight grin as soon as possible while maintaining their self-esteem.

How Does Invisalign Work for Teens?

Invisalign is a method of straightening teeth using a series of custom-made transparent plastic aligners. Your dentist will make imprints of your teenager’s teeth when they visit our office to create the aligners. We create each aligner using digital technology to move your teen’s teeth into a straighter position based on the desired results. You should wear the aligners for 22 hours per day, only removing them for eating, brushing, and flossing. We will take the impressions and the x-rays necessary to make the aligners at one visit to the dentist’s office. At a later date, you will return to the office to receive your custom pair of aligners.

It would help if you planned to visit the dentist every 3-4 weeks to monitor your progress and receive a new pair of aligners. The aligners move your teeth into a straighter position slowly. Teenagers may be hesitant to use aligners because they may feel unpleasant at first. Some initial side effects of Invisalign aligners are that they can cause a lisp or cause your teen to generate more saliva. We understand that these are undesirable, but all of these issues will be resolved as your teen continues to wear their aligners. If your teen does not like that reasoning, there is a solution to ensure that teenagers wear their aligners.

One way to ensure teenagers wear their aligners is with a blue dot. A blue dot will appear on the rear of each set of aligners that your teenager receives. The dot will gradually turn white as they continue to wear their aligners. Teenagers won’t get their next set of aligners until the blue dot has disappeared. The blue dot method will motivate youth to wear their aligners because it is the only way to advance their Invisalign treatment.

Teenagers also socialize with their peers and participate in various extracurricular activities. As they go about their busy lives, they are more prone to misplace or break an aligner. We provide extra aligner replacements with Invisalign for teenagers. Usually, Invisalign only provides a limited number of free replacement aligners; however, while working with teenagers, we offer more aligners. We understand teenagers and their lifestyles. We want to be as accommodating as possible.

The Invisalign treatment for teenagers has been tested many times. It is proven to work and give lasting results. All of our patients that have experienced Invisalign have always shown great reviews on the process. Invisalign is minimally invasive, has little to no discomfort, and provides the best results.

Invisalign can be a great option to discreetly straighten their teeth for many teens. Don’t hesitate to contact Genesis Dental and Orthodontics if you are interested in getting your teen started on Invisalign. To all Utah and Kansas residents, we are committed to assisting your child in achieving a beautiful smile that will increase their self-esteem. Come in now for a consultation and ask any Invisalign questions you may have.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

When you require a dental crown, it could be due to tooth decay, the need to cover a filling, a crown for a dental implant, or cosmetic purposes. But whatever the reason, you should be familiar with the different types of crowns available to you here at Genesis Dental. We offer three different types of crowns: zirconia, gold, and ceramic. Each holds many different pros and cons, please continue reading to learn a little more about each one and how it could benefit you.

Zirconia:

Zirconia is a type of ceramic material that is highly desired for dental crowns, even more so than other porcelain crowns. Zirconia is an opaque material, which means it gives off the same appearance as natural teeth. When using Zirconia crowns, measurements need to be exact right away due to the difficulty surrounding altering the crown after the material has already been cut.

A dental crown made of 100% zirconia is hard and durable. This may be the better option for those who grind their teeth, as the strength of zirconia can withstand strong chewing and grinding over time. Their durability can also save you money down the road as it will last longer and will not need to be replaced, where other crowns might need to.

Gold:

Gold crowns may not be desirable to many patients due to gold being very bright and noticeable while in the mouth. They can also be the more expensive option, but that is because there are so many pros to gold crowns.

Gold crowns are thinner than other types of crowns, which means less of your original tooth will need to be removed to receive a crown. Gold crowns last a long time and they have the best fit in your mouth. Gold is also a metal that your body will tolerate better than others, making it feel more natural in your mouth.

Ceramic:

Dental crowns made out of ceramic are highly desired because they are the most natural-looking when compared to natural teeth. The material used to make a ceramic crown is bio-compatible, which means suffering from a ceramic crown is nearly impossible. A ceramic crown can be shaped in any way, making it feel natural and fit securely around your real tooth.

With ceramic crowns, more of your natural tooth will need to be ground down, which could increase sensitivity to hot and cold in your mouth. Ceramic crowns are also more likely to break when eating hard foods because the material they are made out of is more fragile.

If you need a dental crown, there are plenty of options for each person and their desired results. At Genesis Dental, we want each patient to know exactly what they are getting. If you have any questions about the different dental crowns that we offer, we invite you to come in and ask your questions. We are eager to serve you!

Finding a dentist that can cater to all of your family’s needs can be difficult. With all of the different extracurricular activities that your kids have going on, it can become overwhelming to manage different dental appointments. Genesis Dental is a family dentistry, complete with all of the different procedures that anyone at any age could need. We have five different locations, so if you are in Utah and are looking for a dentist for your family, you have come to the right place! Below are five different reasons why you should see a family dentist.

1. You Will Save Time

Family dentists allow you and all of your family to be seen. You can request multiple appointments for different children all in one day and all at the same place. That way, you don’t need to make multiple trips to the dentist throughout the month. You know where to go and everyone can be treated in time slots close together. When everyone has the same dentist, things will become simpler for you.

2. Comprehensive Dentistry

Because a family dentist offers services for all ages, you can be sure that any dental procedure you are interested in will be offered. The tooth anatomy for younger kids is completely different than it is for adults and their permanent teeth, meaning they require different care. As teeth mature, different services and cleaning procedures will need to be done in order to help keep up good oral hygiene. A family dentist offers all of those procedures so you don’t have to go looking for a new dentist every time you need something done.

3. Clarity of Procedure

When everyone goes to the same dentist, it is easy to know what the different policies are and how each procedure will work. You know of the different fees and scheduling processes. It will be easier for you to keep things organized and clear, instead of trying to remember which dentist does what or how to pay for different procedures. You know exactly what everyone is getting and when and how to pay for things.

4. Dental History

As you grow and begin to search for a new dentist, your dental history records will need to be moved around. At a family dentist, your doctor can and will become very familiar with your dental history and tooth anatomy. For younger kids, if a dentist is familiar with their parents’ tooth anatomy, it will be easier for them to treat the younger kids. They will know how to go about different procedures and can know how kids will react to certain dental procedures.

5. Benefits for Younger Children

For younger kids, the dentist can be quite a nerve-wracking experience. If they are constantly going to the same place, they can become more familiar with the dentist and all of the tools they use. They can see their older siblings and parents go through the same process to help them feel calmer. Family dentists specialize in prioritizing family relationships and helping younger kids feel safe and calm.

If you are looking for a family dentist, Genesis Dental is for you. With five different locations, there is sure to be one close to your home in Utah. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us to gain a better understanding of the different procedures that we offer. We are so excited to have you in our office!

No matter who you are or where you come from, you deserve a bright, white smile that increases your confidence. Many cosmetic dental procedures can alter or enhance the appearance of your smile, so it’s hard to know what will work best for you and will give you the results you desire.

At Genesis Dental, our most popular cosmetic procedures, that almost anyone can qualify for, are teeth whitening and dental veneers. No matter what location of ours you visit in Utah, we want you to understand the service you are receiving and be satisfied with the results.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the quickest ways to alter the appearance of your smile. If you are already satisfied with the alignment and positioning of your teeth, teeth whitening will be your best option. In our office, we offer professional teeth whitening that will quickly and drastically change the shade of your smile.

With the different foods and drinks we consume, our teeth can start to become discolored or stained over time, even if we practice good oral hygiene. Our whitening bleach works deep into the enamel of your teeth in order to give you a brighter smile that is lasting. In just under an hour, you can receive a whole new smile that boosts your confidence.

Teeth whitening only works on your real, natural teeth. If you have any dental crowns, bridges, or implants, teeth whitening will not affect them. Before deciding on this treatment, you will sit down and consult with one of our dental professionals about what shade you desire.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are one of our most popular cosmetic procedures that won’t only brighten your teeth but to also change the shape and alignment of your teeth. Veneers are thin sheets of porcelain that are custom made to match your tooth anatomy and in the desired shade you would like. They are cemented onto the outer surface of your teeth using a dental adhesive. Veneers work to correct:

  • misalignment
  • gaps in your teeth
  • uneven tooth lengths
  • stains or discoloration

If you are wanting to change one or more of the listed characteristics of any teeth in your smile, dental veneers are for you.

Genesis Dental offers both teeth whitening and dental veneers to help you gain a smile that you are proud of. No matter where you live, all of our five locations in Utah are ready to serve you. If you have any questions about either teeth whitening or dental veneers, we invite you to come in for a consultation. We are eager and ready to help you improve your smile!

If you want to replace some missing teeth, you have limited options. You either choose implants or dentures. However, choosing the right approach depends on various factors, such as the remaining teeth, jawbone health, prices, and preference.

Dental implants and dentures have their pros and cons. It’s, therefore, important to discuss with your dentist to know what suits you the best. Implants and dentures have the same purpose, which includes:

  • Improve speech
  • Enables you to chew food with ease
  • Reduce self-consciousness
  • Boost self-esteem and confidence
  • Support facial muscles

Although these two options serve the same purpose, they have some differences.

Dental Implants VS Dentures: Major Differences

Learning the differences between implants and dentures will enable you to choose the right approach. Some of the differences include:

Cost

The cost of dentures and implants varies, but implants are more expensive. According to the American Dental Association, the price of a dental implant per tooth may range between $1,600 and $2,200. On the other hand, dentures may cost around $1,600 for a complete upper denture.

However, dentures need to be removed regularly for cleaning with a possibility of being replaced. You’ll also be restricted from eating some foods as they may affect your dentures.

Procedure

With implants, screw-like implants are capped with crowns. The damaged root is first extracted, and a hole is drilled into your jawbone. A post, customarily called a metal prosthetic root, will get implanted deep into the drilled hole.

The root will be covered with a crown, but only once the bone grows around the post. This may take a couple of months. The final stage is to have an artificial match that surrounds the teeth.

On the other hand, dentures are prosthetic, removable teeth that can be easily fitted in your mouth regardless of your bone stature. Dentures may replace all upper or lower jaw sets of teeth or replace a few of them, called a partial denture.

The dentists will first study the alignment of your lower and upper jaws to ensure the length of the dentures will enable you to chew with ease. Dentures are designed to look like natural gums and teeth held with a unique adhesive to bond them firmly to your gums.

Maintenance

Taking care of your implants is the same as a dental hygiene routine for natural teeth. It means you brush at least twice a day, flossing with regular checkups. Ensure you use a soft-bristle brush to avoid damaging implants.

Greater daily maintenance is required to make dentures remain viable. For instance, you should wear them overnight and should be soaked in a special cleaning solution or water during that time.

Ensure you remove them after taking meals and brush them. And since your bite changes with time, the dentures may need to get refitted now and then.

Book an Appointment with Professionals

Ensure you choose between implants and dentures carefully and in consultation with a professional. Although dental implants are expensive, you’re guaranteed several years of service. However, dentures are ideal if you have a tight budget.

If you’re in Salt Lake City, Utah, free to visit or call us to schedule your appointment date.

A cavity is a hole or permanent damage to your tooth that results from tooth decay. If left untreated, the cavity can grow bigger and lead to serious dental issues.

Signs and symptoms of cavities are:

  • Sensitive teeth
  • Holes in your teeth
  • Pain while chewing
  • Occurrence of pain or toothache
  • Brown, white or black tooth stains.

Causes of Cavities

The main cause of tooth cavities is the buildup of plaque that binds to the teeth. Plaque is a sticky substance that comprises food particles, saliva, acid and bacteria.

After consuming sugary foods, the bacteria contained in your mouth turn the sugar into acid, resulting in plaque formation. As the plaque sticks to your teeth, the acid contained in the plaque leads to erosion of the tooth enamel, which protects your teeth against tooth decay.

Risk Factor of Cavities

Anyone is at risk of developing cavities; however, the risk becomes aggravated due to several factors: insufficient fluoride, eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, acid reflux, and too much consumption of acidic or sugary foods.

The back teeth are at a higher risk of developing cavities than the front teeth due to openings that can easily trap food.

How to Prevent Tooth Cavities

Preventive dentistry is the most effective way of preventing tooth cavities. These includes:

Regular Brushing

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride can help alleviate the chances of cavities forming. It would be best if you found an ideal toothbrush that can clean every part of your mouth and reach every surface of your teeth.

Bacteria that cause bad odour are normally found on the tongue; finding a toothbrush with a textured tongue cleaner can help remove the bacteria.

Use of Dental Floss

Flossing is also vital in the removal of food particles that could be stuck between your teeth.

Dental Visits

If you’re in Salt Lake City, Utah, you should consider scheduling a dental visit at least once every year to check on the status of your gums or teeth. Frequent dental visits will allow identification of any problems that require to be addressed immediately.

Eat a Balanced Diet

A balanced diet is essential in providing the right nutrients for your teeth. Reducing the intake of sugary foods and simple carbohydrates is important to prevent sugar conversion into acid.

Consuming vitamins is beneficial to your oral health. Eating raw fruits and vegetables can act as a natural scrubber to remove plaque from your teeth.

Straightening your teeth is the best decision you can make as someone who desires to live a happy and fulfilled life.

Here is why

  • It improves your general look, thus raising your self-esteem
  • Straightening your teeth enhances blood flow, resulting in healthier gums and reduced avenues for bacteria to survive.
  • It makes it easier to properly clean the teeth, making it difficult for harmful bacteria to survive
  • Straightening your teeth help fight other diseases such as heart disease and stroke

There are various methods used in straightening crooked teeth, such as traditional braces, Invisalign, surgery, and growth modification.

This post compares two of the most common treatment methods: the Invisalign and the conventional braces.

Invisalign treatment entails the usage of virtually invisible transparent aligners to correct misaligned teeth. On the other hand, a traditional brace is a treatment method that involves using metal brackets fixed on the front surface of the teeth.

Which Is Better, Invisalign or Traditional Braces?

First, it’s essential to understand that no method between the two works better than the other. The truth is these treatment methods work differently to align crooked teeth. Your homework, therefore, lies in understanding how each process works.

Traditional Braces

These braces are made using brackets and archwires. Once fitted over the teeth, the archwires help treat misalignment by exerting gentle continuous pressure on the frames, moving the crooked teeth over time.

Treatment through this method entails tightening and adjusting the wires to acquire the needed teeth posture. Traditional braces are effective in correcting overbite, underbite, and crossbite issues. It takes approximately two years for someone wearing these braces to get their teeth to the preferred position.

Advantages of Traditional Braces

  • They are durable and can last you for the longest time with proper care
  • Unlike their counterparts, they can treat a wide variety of dental problems.

Limitations of Traditional Braces

  • They are less appealing as they lie visibly on each teeth
  • Traditional braces require regular adjusting, which is inconveniencing to most busy people and school-going children
  • It makes cleaning some parts of your teeth difficult
  • They restrict taking in some foods and drinks, especially those that increase cavities.

Invisalign

This method entails using removable, custom-made smooth plastic aligners to straighten the misaligned teeth. The set of aligners are changed after every two weeks until the teeth get back to their preferred position.

It may take you approximately 6 to 18 weeks to get your teeth to their proper position with this mode of treatment.

Advantages of Invisalign

  • Minor irritation since they are made using plastic material
  • They do not interfere with one’s beauty since they are invisible
  • They do not interfere with one’s way of life as they can easily be removed when eating, brushing, and drinking.
  • Invisalign enables one to maintain a high quality of oral health throughout treatment.

Limitations of Invisalign

  • They cannot treat all types of dental issues, such as a severe overbite.
  • Invisalign cannot work with too short and much-rotated teeth.

So, Which Method Is Good for You?

The appropriate method for you depends on several factors, such as the severity of your condition, your budget, preference, and your schedule. Before settling on any of the above methods, it is important to first visit a dentist for diagnosis and professional guidance on the way forward.

If you are in Salt Lake City, Utah, and desire to have a change in your oral health and dental presentation, consider visiting us at Genesis Dental for professional guidance and improved general quality of life.

What are circumstances where Emergency Dental Care is needed?

One of the most essential bodily functions of most people is undoubtedly your mouth. Together with this comes your teeth, which is most likely the cause for any discomfort you may experience in your mouth. Your mouth is responsible for eating and communicating with people, whether family or work-related individuals. Dental problems could be a painful and tedious process and may cause extreme discomfort for people even when you’re just drinking cold water. Eating and talking while having a dental emergency is almost impossible due to the pain and discomfort this puts on you. When you find yourself in a position where you have a dental emergency, getting an appointment as soon as possible isn’t always as simple as it might sound. Most practices work on strict scheduling, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Most of us understand the frustration of having dental issues and being unable to obtain dental services within a short time frame. It might increase the likelihood of infections and cause even greater havoc. Let’s look at the most common causes of dental emergencies people experience.

Abscessed teeth

An abscess in your teeth refers to a pocket of discharge within your teeth caused by a bacterial infection. People mostly suffer from two types of abscesses: a periapical abscess that originates at the root of the tip. The second one is referred to as a periodontal abscess that occurs in the gums at the tooth root’s side. When this happens it could be vital to obtain Emergency Dentistry to relieve you from the pain. An abscessed tooth can be treated in various ways. The most recommended method is by drilling into your tooth to drain the pus. After that, you may expect a tooth extraction followed by antibiotics to ensure your mouth heals and no further infections occur.

Orthodontic Emergencies

These types of emergencies are most people with braces’ worst nightmare. The cause of this might be anything from broken, loose, or lost brackets to protruding wires causing pain. It can cause significant discomfort for the person suffering due to this problem. Most orthodontic emergencies are quite simple to resolve, but getting an appointment as soon as possible remains the issue on hand. Most individuals suffer from the moment their braces start giving problems to finally getting to someone who can help. This means getting an appointment as soon as possible is crucial in relieving the pain.

Broken Tooth

A broken tooth can be caused by just about anything, from falling to biting something too hard. It causes extreme pain, and drinking and eating are not ideal for someone with a broken tooth. That being said, getting emergency services as soon as a tooth breaks is recommendable, seeing as your daily life will seem impossible with it.

Many individuals sometimes forget how vital their mouth and teeth are. Look after them, ensure you brush them twice a day with FDA-approved toothpaste, and keep your mouth and gums healthy. Your life will be much tastier this way, and toothaches will always be the last problem you have.

What Are Some Restorative Dentistry Procedures We Offer

In the case you thought that dentistry was only for dental complications, think again. Many people have discovered the art of restorative dentistry, which is an excellent way of enhancing your physical appearance or just relieving yourself of subtle discomfort now and again. In many instances, people lack confidence because their teeth are not perfectly aligned. Irrespective of the fact that it doesn’t change you, it does change how you feel about yourself, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters most. If you want to have something fixed in your teeth, whether it’s for aesthetics, your self-esteem, or just simply because you can. It’s always a good idea to consider all available options and make an informed decision. Let’s look at some restorative dentistry procedures we offer at Genesis Dental

Gum Recontouring

For many individuals with a high gum line and dislike the fact that their gums are too visible when they smile wide on pictures, there is a feasible solution. Gum recontouring, also known as gum contouring or gum reshaping, can be an absolute lifesaver. This procedure entails straightening up your gum line, which will give the impression that your teeth are evenly shaped. It might also pronounce your teeth and hide your gums on photos, ultimately ensuring that you have a picture-perfect smile every time. Many people with broad smiles opt for this procedure, and it will leave a lasting impression on your overall appearance.

Dental Crowns

Are you tired of the extreme discomfort when brushing your teeth, drinking cold water, or just while going about your day? This most likely is caused by dental decay. Whether it’s because of your stubbornness or just because you have a history of bad teeth, a dental crown might be a great solution to your problem. Dental crowns not only instantly take away the pain, but they are specifically built for every person, so they won’t even be noticeable as they’ll have the appearance of your natural teeth. Dental crowns are made of zirconia, ceramic, or gold to ensure they are durable and don’t need constant maintenance. Once you’ve received a dental crown, it will stop your original tooth from further decay.

Implant Dentures

We all know, the older we get, the weaker many parts of our body become. Our teeth are a great example of this. Many older individuals are prone to having their teeth chipped and broken due to their sheer age and all they’ve been through. Don’t worry when this happens, as it is an entirely regular occurrence. When you notice this in your teeth, you have a variety of options to choose from. You can either get removable dentures, implant dentures, or full implants fixed bridges considering your affordability. Like everything in life, the most convenient option is also the most expensive one. The type of dentures you get also depends on your oral health, so consult with your dental services before making a final decision.

If you need any advice, contact our offices and speak to our experienced personnel who are fully capable of leading you in the right direction. If you finally decide to get yourself dentures, remember to consider your lifestyle and food choice. It will affect the final experience you have. Now, go out there and smile wide and be proud of who you are!

What are the different types and benefits of dental crowns?

Going to the dentist is always a scary experience for most people – in fact, it is said to be the most feared profession in the world. Yet, there is nothing as satisfying as having healthy teeth, and you even feel more confident when you showcase your pearly white smile. But, the hard truth is that to achieve that smile, you need to visit the dentist every once in a while for a check-up. The most important thing to remember is that if you have an issue with a tooth that’s aching or giving you problems, you attend to the situation as soon as possible. The reason for this is that when it comes to dental issues, a tiny problem can very quickly turn into a much more painful complication. Luckily, thanks to technology and some of the brightest minds science has to offer, solutions have been invented for almost every issue your teeth could possibly present – one of these solutions is dental crowns. Below you will find the different types of crowns available in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the benefits in regards to receiving dental crowns.

Different Types of Crowns

There are many different types of crowns for you to choose from, depending on your preference, allergies, and your tooth’s shape and color. These different types of crowns include the following:

Porcelain crowns – One of the most popular choices is porcelain crowns – they look the most natural and blend in nicely with your teeth.

Metal crowns – Although porcelain crowns may be more popular, metal crowns last much longer. The average metal crown can last as long as an entire lifetime, where porcelain crowns last for only about fifteen years – this is still a very long time, but not as long compared to the metal crown.

Resin crowns – Made from composite material, resin crowns also look very natural. Depending on the material used and the quality work the dentist puts in when inserting the crown, the longevity of a resin crown is anywhere from five to ten years.

Zirconia crowns – Categorized as a type of ceramic crown, zirconia is actually more related to titanium, being made from zirconium dioxide. This specific type of crown is extremely durable, much more than ceramic, and retains its white luminescent glow for a long time as well.

Benefits of dental crowns

Dental crowns are basically caps placed over broken or decayed teeth to restore the tooth’s health and give a much more aesthetically pleasing smile. There are many benefits of having dental crowns, the first being the crown’s longevity – they last for at least five years (this is the worst-case scenario and is highly unlikely). Second of all, they are a quick and instant fix for any broken, discolored, or decayed teeth, solving your dentistry issues right away. Lastly, dental crowns not only give you a much better and fuller smile, but they take away any discomfort or pain you might have been experiencing beforehand. It’s a simple procedure with maximum results. The only question left to ask is – what are you waiting for?

gum recontouring blog
Take a good look at your gums. What do you see? Is your gum line low, high, or uneven? With gum recontouring, you can change it! In fact, it may even be recommended by your dentist. Gum recontouring, which is also known as gingival sculpting or gingivoplasty is the process of surgically reshaping your teeth. Yes, it involves cutting away your gum tissues. In some cases, it can even involve restoring tissues. To help you make your decision about whether or not to have this procedure, keep reading!

Who Needs It?

smiling people

Everyone has different gum lines, and everyone has different needs. Some may want to get the procedure simply for cosmetic reasons to improve their smile. Such cases may Others may get it to help resolve medical issues like

  • Gum recession
  • Gum disease
  • Crown lengthening
  • Pocket reduction
  • Regenerative procedures

What are the Benefits of Gum Recontouring?

Gum reshaping can be beneficial in various ways, and it all just depends on why you’re getting it in the first place. If for cosmetic reasons, then it may help improve your self-esteem. You may find yourself smiling more and not hiding your smile when speaking in public or having your picture taken. If it’s considered a medical necessity, then it may help you prevent further deterioration to your gums and teeth. This may also prevent you from needing to get dentures or implants at an early age.

What Does the Gum Recontouring Procedure Involve?

gum recontouring laser
This is an in-office procedure where you’ll be given a local anesthetic that numbs your gums. You’ll most likely stay awake during the procedure, but you won’t feel a thing! For tissue-removing procedures, your dentist will use a soft tissue laser or a scalpel to remove gum tissue or resculp your gum line. If needed, stitches will be used to keep gum tissue in place. For tissue-adding procedures, your dentist will remove tissue from another part of your mouth and add it to the part of your gum line that needs it. All together, this procedure can take one to two hours.

To be expected, you may feel some tenderness after the procedure. The level of discomfort will depend entirely on how much work was done to your gums. The recovery process may take days or weeks. It just depends on the extent of the procedure. To know what to expect fully, make sure you talk to your dentist about recovery before getting your gum recontouring done.

treats to eat with braces during the holidays graphic

With the holiday season around the corner, yummy foods and tasty desserts can be more prevalent around the house and at family get-togethers. For those with braces, you can still enjoy the holiday season by knowing what desserts are braces-friendly.

Let’s first talk about what you should stay away from:

  • Nuts
  • Hard candy
  • Sticky or chewy desserts

The common theme here is not eating anything that could cause damage to your braces and teeth. Hard candy and desserts with nuts can pop your braces off. Desserts that have a sticky or chewy substance can also pop off braces as well as easily get caught in between your braces and cause cavities. It’s best to avoid these foods while you are going through this teeth-correcting process.

Now that you know what you should stay away from, you can better assess the dessert table and choose the yummy options that don’t compromise your teeth correcting treatment. It’s important to remember that keeping your mouth healthy and removing all the sugar from sitting on your teeth is a top priority, especially during the holidays. This can be done by brushing and flossing twice a day and even washing your mouth out with water after you’re done with your dessert.

If you strive to keep your mouth healthy, you can eat and enjoy the holiday season with some tasty desserts. Here are our top picks for some that are braces-friendly.

Frosted Sugar Cookies

christmas cookies

Any kind of cookie is a great holiday dessert option for braces if the consistency is soft and it doesn’t contain nuts. We prefer a traditional sugar cookie decorated with some yummy and festive frosting on top! Try to avoid really hard sprinkles as they can also hurt your braces. If you’re feeling up to making some sugar cookies *yourself either for a date night or to share with some loved ones, check out this sugar cookie recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction.

*If you’re not familiar with cooking, make sure to have an adult or someone who knows how with you to prevent injuries.

Pudding

Because of their consistency, puddings and custards are great dessert options during the holidays! You can enjoy the sweet taste of chocolate or vanilla without the worry of breaking a bracket in the process. Puddings can be bought individually-packaged at your local grocery store or prepared right in the comfort of your own kitchen! If you choose to make your pudding or custard at home, check out A Spicy Perspective’s Chocolate Pudding Recipe.

Hot Cocoa

christmas hot cocoa

Winter isn’t complete without some hot cocoa, right? This hot, chocolatey drink is easy to make and perfect for an on-the-go drink during the cold winter months. If you’re looking to have a fun activity with your family, make some from scratch! All you need is two tablespoons of cocoa powder and two cups of milk (or any substitute). Mix them in a pot and bring to a boil. You can add some marshmallows for a little more sweetness or some peppermint extract (not candy cane) for an extra dash of holiday yumminess. Enjoy!

Cupcakes

christmas decorated chocolate cupcakes

Did anyone say holiday cupcakes? Bake these tasty desserts at home or enjoy them at a family party because they’re absolutely braces-friendly! The soft and fluffy texture of the cake with the smooth and sweet frosting can do no harm to your brackets. Just make sure you rinse your mouth afterward with water and brush your teeth as soon as you can so the sugar doesn’t stay trapped in your mouth and cause cavities. If you’re searching for a festive cupcake recipe, check out this Delish Christmas Lights Cupcake recipe.

Pies

Pies are a holiday staple! While it’s important to stay away from pies with nuts such as pecan pie, there are many tasty and braces-friendly options. Some options can be pumpkin, chocolate, apple, peach, or banana cream. These yummy flavors can definitely sweeten your holiday!

Brownies

brownies with cream cheese frosting and strawberries to look like a santa hat

Brownies are another tasty dessert option for braces! While you should definitely avoid any brownies with nuts or sticky caramel, plain brownies can be soft enough to enjoy without any fear of hurting your braces. Pair the brownie with some ice cream and you’ve made a great holiday dessert. Check out this yummy Better Than Box Mix Chocolate Brownies recipe.

Cheesecake

thanksgiving cheesecake

This soft and mouth-watering dessert is another holiday favorite perfect for those with braces. There are so many different options of cheesecake toppings and crust that can make for a yummy dessert after a hearty meal. Do you like Oreos? Opt for an oreo crust and some chocolate syrup on top. Are you a more traditional cheesecake lover? Choose some cherry or blueberry pie filling to drizzle on top. Whatever you choose, you can enjoy some yummy cheesecake during the holiday season.

invisalign vs braces graphic

Are you considering your options to correct you or your child’s teeth? Braces and Invisalign are two of the most common cosmetic procedures to correct teeth placement as well as improving your smile and health. Having the correct information to weight your options can make for an easier decision and smoother process. That’s why we, at Genesis Dental, want to talk about the advantages and disadvantages to both. We’ve built a visual reference and you can read more in-depth below!

Invisalign vs Braces Chart

Learn About Invisalign

Invisalign is a teeth correcting treatment that uses clear tray aligners. These aligners are created using molds of your mouth. Different aligners will be used throughout the process to correct your smile. They are usually changed out every one to two weeks which is determined by what your dentist sees best.

The Advantages of Invisalign

Invisalign aligner

When it comes to choosing Invisalign, we want to highlight the three most important advantages:

  • Removability
  • Visibility
  • Time

Removability

Invisalign has the unique characteristic that traditional braces don’t have in that they can be removed. With traditional braces, you would not be able to take off your braces to better clean your teeth through brushing and flossing or eat whatever food you want. Invisalign aims to solve this problem.

When it’s time to eat, simply take off your aligners, put them in a safe place, and enjoy your food. There’s no worrying about what foods you can eat that won’t get stuck in your braces. With Invisalign, you can eat what you want. However, there is one extra step. When you’re done, you’ll need to brush your teeth and make sure your aligners are clean before inserting them back into your mouth.

Visibility

young woman holding invisalign aligner

Many people opt for Invisalign over traditional braces for visual appeal. Traditional braces are bulky and, even with lighter bands, are still very visible. Because Invisalign aligners are clear, they are way less noticeable than braces. Because of their less noticeable appearance, adults and working professionals favor Invisalign because of this quality.

Time

The general time frame for a person to have Invisalign is about 12 to 18 months depending on the patient’s needs. Traditional braces are often 18 months to 3 years. This general time frame is given under the condition that the aligners are worn 22-24 hours a day. If the aligners aren’t worn, your results and treatment time will be longer than expected.

The Disadvantages of Invisalign

There are a couple of the most common hindrances people face. They are the maintenance and cost. Let’s look a little deeper as to why.

Maintenance

The maintenance for Invisalign can be a little time consuming on a daily basis. You need to take your trays out and clean your teeth every time you’re done eating to prevent any food from getting stuck in your teeth and causing some unhealthy damage. Along with this, Invisalign trays need to be changed every two weeks. Usually they will be sent to your house and you simply need to replace the old ones with the news, however, making sure you’re changing them can take more time and effort than traditional braces that stay in your mouth.

Cost

The average price for Invisalign is anywhere from $3,000 to $7000. Now, your insurance may cover some of this cost. However, compared to traditional braces, Invisalign can be the more expensive option. We, at Genesis Dental, will work with you and your insurance for the lowest cost possible for your unique situation.

Learn About Metal Braces

a mouth smiling with braces

Metal braces, also known as traditional braces, are the most common form of teeth correcting services having been around since 400 B.C. Braces are made of metal brackets that are glued to the enamel of each tooth with metal wires connecting the brackets. These wires are what help mold and shape your teeth over time.

The Advantages of Braces

When it comes to traditional braces, our picks for the two most important advantages are maintenance and cost.

Maintenance

Maintenance for traditional braces, in the long run, can be an advantage to other treatments. While you will have to visit an orthodontist every 4 to 6 weeks to get them tightened, traditional braces can’t be removed. For those who lose their possessions easily, this could be a great attribute because you don’t have to worry about where your braces are since they’re always in your mouth.

Cost

The cost for traditional braces can also be an advantage. The specific cost is determined by a number of factors such as the type of treatment, the duration, the orthodontist, location, and insurance. However, traditional braces can be a little cheaper than other treatments. The average price without insurance is around $2,500 to $6,000.

The Disadvantages of Braces

girl surprised with invisalign on

There are three main disadvantages with braces:

  • Removability
  • Diet
  • Visibility

Removability

Although the removability factor can be a positive factor for some, not being able to remove your braces can have some negative consequences such as food in your teeth and a lack of hygiene. With all that metal in your mouth, food can get stuck in many places. The best way to get the food unstuck would be to brush and floss. We all know that flossing can take extra time. However, when you have braces it can take even more time. Setting aside time to create a flossing routine is a necessity when having braces, because if you don’t, your chances of gingivitis can increase.

Diet

Unlike Invisalign, braces can’t be taken out of your mouth when you eat but are permanently attached to your teeth until the treatment is over. When it comes to your diet, you will need to take extra precautions so your brackets aren’t popped off and have to be reattached or replaced. Foods you should try and avoid with braces are anything sticky and hard such as popcorn, apples, candy, gum, and ice.

Visibility

Traditional braces are definitely more noticeable than Invisalign. For those that want a less noticeable teeth correcting treatment, braces might not be the way to go. For the most part, they are pretty bulky and noticeable even with clear brackets.

preventing cavities

Up until recently, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) was something that didn’t come up in everyday conversation. In 2020, we’re paying close attention to everything that the CDC says—especially when it comes to COVID-19. However, let’s step away from the pandemic talk and take a moment to look at something that the CDC said back in 2015 regarding cavities:

“Approximately 91% of U.S. adults aged 20–64 had dental caries in permanent teeth in 2011–2012” (Dental Caries and Tooth Loss in Adults in the United States, 2011–2012)

91 percent is an incredibly high statistic! Because of this, we don’t want this “How to Prevent Cavities” guide to be seen as something just for children. We hope that every individual, no matter how young or old, will be able to use this guide to help improve their oral health.

6 Steps to Prevent Cavities

Step 1: Watch Your Sugar Intake

sugar pouring out of a soda can

You’ve heard this time and time again. Sugar isn’t the best thing for your body, but we’re not here to tell you to put down the soda and walk away from it forever. It’s okay to treat yourself to a tasty guilty pleasure every now and then, but moderation is key!

How does sugar cause cavities? The plaque on your teeth produces bacteria that interacts with the sugar you eat. This interaction then produces acid that eats at the enamel on your teeth, creating cavities.

How much sugar should you have per day? According to heart.org, men should only consume up to 9 teaspoons (36 grams) per day. In contrast, women should only take in 6 teaspoons (25 grams). Think about that for one second and then think about how much sugar is in our everyday foods. One can of soda has 8 teaspoons (32 grams) of sugar. That’s an obvious source of sugar. Think about all of the condiments we use with our foods or even some of the soups that we typically think of as “healthy”, like Thai curry or Vientamese pho, that contain lots of sugar.

Step 2: Brush Your Teeth Consistently

You’ve probably heard your parents telling you this every day growing up and, if you have kids, you most likely tell them this too. Brush your teeth every morning night!

As busy adults, we often end the day just done with work, taking care of family responsibilities, and other factors of our adulting lives. Sometimes we are just ready to drop and get to bed as quickly as we can at the end of the day. How many times have you done that without brushing your teeth before going to bed? It’s a pretty common task to neglect, but it’s so important! Think about the long-term impact that it could have on your teeth if you weren’t to routinely brush your teeth. Then, stay up two minutes longer to brush your teeth. Your future health will thank you!

Step 3: Take Flossing Seriously

father and son flossing

In 2017, the American Dental Association (ADA) released survey results claiming that only 16% of adults floss once per day. Likewise, the CDC says that one-third of Americans never floss. If you think about it, brushing allows you to clean some of your teeth but not entirely. See, each tooth has five surfaces and only three of them can be reached with a toothbrush. Two surfaces can only be cleaned if you are flossing your teeth. If you put all of this together, it means that one-third of Americans aren’t cleaning 40% of their teeth. That’s some pretty hard truth, right?

If you’re struggling to make flossing your teeth a habit, set some personal goals. Make it a goal to floss once this week. Then, go for two times next week. Keep increasing every week until you are at a point where you are flossing daily. It’s all about making time to floss and making it a habit. You’ve got this!

Step 4: Avoid Frequent Snacking

Are you the type of person who loves to snack throughout the day? It’s okay to have a snack once or twice per day. However, you need to be careful when it comes to consistent snacking throughout the day. Many snack foods have lots of sugar in them and, as mentioned above, sugary foods can create cavity-causing acid in your mouth. By snacking constantly, you’ll increase the amount of acid in your mouth and break down your enamel.

Step 5: Drink Water

a woman drinking water

Water not only helps to hydrate your body, but it also helps to naturally clean your teeth. It helps wash food particles out of your mouth and doesn’t leave behind harmful residue like soda, juice, or even flavored milks do. If your water has fluoride in it, it will be even more beneficial and can even help prevent tooth decay over time.

Step 6: Visit Your Dentist Regularly

dentist and assistant working in patient's mouth

Your dentist can help evaluate the status of your oral hygiene and provide you with honest feedback. They’ll help you put together an action plan for getting your dental health back on track. It’s important to visit the dentist every six month, so please call a Genesis Dental location near you to set that appointment. If you’re concerned about insurance, please make sure to check out our Loyalty Plan.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “is dental insurance really worth it?” you’ve come to the right place. Dental insurance can be affordable, help you prevent problems down the road, and yes, completely worth it.

infographic of different insurance plans

What Does Dental Insurance Cover?

Your dental insurance coverage can vary, as there are different types of insurance. Here are a few common types of dental insurance:

Indemnity or Fee-for-Service Plans

Indemnity plans allow you to pick the provider and pay a percentage of your provider’s fee. This type of insurance may be ideal for someone who has a specific dentist in mind, but they are outside of your work’s insurance network.

Preferred Provider Organization Plans (PPO)

PPO plans offer lower costs to “preferred” providers in your network. So, you have the option of seeing other providers, but may run into higher costs with them. Depending on the PPO plan, you could potentially be paying less for a preferred provider than with an indemnity plan.

Health Maintenance Organization Plans (HMO)

An HMO plan requires you to see providers in your network. These types of plans can be ideal for someone who would benefit from covered preventive services, but is not planning on needing major restorative dental services, as these types of plans commonly offer lower coverage beyond basic procedures.

Once you’ve figured out a plan that fits your needs, you’ll need to know what they cover! Dental insurance typically covers three types of needs:

  • Preventative care, such as exams, cleanings, and x-rays
  • Basic procedures, such as fillings, extractions, and periodontal work
  • Major procedures, such as crowns, root canals, implants, and more

Your plan will determine how much you pay for each type of care. It is common for preventative care to be completely covered by your insurance, while basic procedures and major procedures can vary as to the amount your insurance will pay. In our opinion, covered preventative care is what truly makes dental insurance worth it.

As with most things, preventions help keep a small problem from getting worse. Seeing your dentist twice a year can keep tooth decay from turning into a cavity, and a cavity from turning into something worse. Tooth decay, also known as dental caries, is extremely common for American adults.

“Approximately 91 percent of U.S. adults aged 20–64 had dental caries in permanent teeth in 2011–2012. By the time they hit 65, 96 percent of Americans have tooth decay.”

The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics

Say you skip the dentist, and let the tooth decay go untreated. This can form a cavity, and from there, untreated cavities can lead to further issues such as a tooth abscess, or rotting of the inside of the tooth. Once you’re at that point, it’s a costly procedure for fixes like a root canal or removal of the tooth. These costs start around a couple hundred dollars, but can easily climb into the range of a thousand or more dollars to treat, even with insurance.

If your dental insurance covers preventive procedures, it is more likely to save you money in the long run than if you skip preventative care and end up with a costly issue.
